It’s that time of year, y’all. The time when we try on seemingly thousands of bathing suits trying to find something that hides all of our flaws- all those things we happily hide with scarves and bulky sweaters for half the year. And yet, at a time when we’re already fully conscious of our insecurities, we’re bombarded by Photoshopped ads of teeny tiny swimsuits and teeny tinier bodies.
Hot weather brings “hot ways to rock that bikini,” “loose that flab!” and lots of other magazine covers promising your best summer yet- if you’ll just improve your appearance.
Many of you know about my battle with anorexia, and many of you have struggled with eating disorders yourself. And many have struggled in other ways- emotional eating, uncontrollable eating, putting on excess weight due to medications or illness, etc.
In a world where skinny is worshiped, I’ve struggled tremendously to keep a healthy mindset about my appearance. After getting married and enjoying a few too many Taco Bell “4th meals” at 1am, I’m certainly not the weight I was when I battled with anorexia.
And most days I’m ok with that. Because I’m so thankful God got a hold of me before it was too late.
But sometimes I see high school photos of a skinnier self and it’s so hard to keep a godly perspective on weight loss.
I sometimes swing back and forth between “Who cares?” and “Oh my gosh, crash diet starts NOW!”
Obviously, neither are healthy- or godly. God’s Word says that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Instead of a physical tabernacle/building where people had to purposefully approach God (like in the Old Testament), now we have access to God 24/7- and He’s living inside us! That’s pretty amazing when you really think about it! Our body is God’s house- so we need to give Him a healthy welcome!
But how do we lose weight God’s way?
We need to realize that God loves us regardless of our appearance.
If you’re losing weight to feel better about yourself, it won’t work. Some of the most insecure people I know are the “perfect” ones. The ones who’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on tanning, plastic surgery, expensive diet supplements, personal trainers, etc. They might be flawless according to the world’s standards, but after their beauty checklist is done, they realize that outward perfection can’t cure inward insecurities.
We have to view our bodies with the right perspective- that they’re simply loans from God.
This is our temporary home and our temporary bodies. One day, maybe today or maybe 80 years from now, everything will change. When you die, God’s Word promises that as a child of God you will live with Him forever- in heaven! It’s not going to matter that you were rich or successful… or not. It’s not going to matter that you were perfectly put together… or honestly a hot mess most of the time.
What’s going to matter is how you glorified God with the opportunities He gave you.
Walking around as the Temple of God is an amazing opportunity. What are we doing with it? Are we determined to glorify God by treating our bodies well? Or are we using sketchy binge diets or supplements to get the body we want- without the work? Or… are we eating whatever we want without any consideration to how it’s deteriorating our health?
I’m not a doctor, y’all. And healthy living is a HUGE subject that’s really hard to cover in a short little blog post. That’s why I’m sooooooo excited about today’s giveaway!
